Les Miserables Lives On...

In 1992 when I was 15 years old, I worked\camped at a little ol' camp called Camp Shamineau (Whoop Whoop EV Free!!!) Anyway, it was the first summer that I was old enough to be a CIT (Counselor in Training) after years of idolizing the counselors as a camper. That summer I befriended a girl, Erin Van Vonderen. We had crazy fun and lots of little adventures all summer long. Erin would always be signing these pretty little songs that would just stick in your head. And so one day I asked her what she was always singing and she said, "It's Les Mis of course!" Thus began my love affair. I went home that fall and promptly purchased the Les Miserables cassette tape! and began to memorize every song. I knew that there was a book, Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, but had not read it. So I also bought a copy and read the abridged version. As soon as I got my driver's licence i purchased tickets to Les Mis at the Ordway and Erin and I went to see a real live Les Mis production. I felt so grown up and proud to be doing this all on my own. I thought the music on my little tape was spectacular, but when I saw the production live, I was blown away, I think I cried! Then the obsession really began. I named a cat Marius after one of the main characters, and i vowed if I ever had a daughter I would name her Cosette. My dream was to perform as either Fantine or Eponine on Broadway, although the Ordway would be just fine too! I have since seen Les Miserables over a dozen times. I have also read the Unabridged version of the book.. chunk by chunk, but I did it... I am constantly struck by the beauty of the themes of Les Miserables, Love and Redemption, Forgiveness and the Triumph of the Human Spirit.
So this Sunday night, I went with Cindy, Shannon and Ellen to see Les Miserables at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. It was a very well done production, and I must admit i was a little hesitant about seeing it there, since I have always seen it at the Ordway, but I was very impressed. And of course, it never ever, fails to move me... Someday I hope to see it in Paris, all done in French. And I'm still haven't given up my dream of being either Fantine or Eponine. And while I'm at it, I'm still naming my daughter Cosette!

P.S. If you're wondering about my cat Marius, he's still keeping it real on the farm at age 15!

Snakes and Fire, Oh My!

Well I did it! They say that everyday you should do something you're afraid of, or do something you fear. Whatever the saying is, not only did I do one monumental thing i am afraid of, but two!!!
I didn't plan for either of these things to happen. I didn't wake up this week thinking, "Hey God, please let me tackle my 2 biggest fears." But when you least expect it, life hands you the opportunity to face what you're afraid of, and you can either run away or face it head on.
So when i needed to use my stove top, I found that both pilot lights were out. I knew that one was out, pretty much since I've lived here. But i was very content working with 2 burners, even if it was a hassle and i really need 3 to cook on. Nonetheless, I needed to use a burner and to my shock the last pilot light was out. Now I have never lit a pilot light. What I really fear is being started on fire, and pilot lights have the makings of a big explosion. I stood there in my kitchen for about 10 minutes... agonizing over what to do. I kept lifting up the stove top and peeking in, secretly hoping that it would magically light. No luck. So I just bit the bullet, lit a match, held my breath and lowered the flame to the pilot light and and and... a small tinsy flicker of flame appeared! No big explosion, nothing that singed my eyelashes, nor did I catch on fire. And then... I repeated the same actions to the second pilot. And... I lived!

and if that wasn't earth shattering enough...
I went out to my parents house to help them paint some rooms. And when I was done, and walked outside to get some fresh air... low and behold there was a snake! Now I hate snakes, not just dislike, but i am passionately and crazily afraid of them. I have been that way since i was a little girl. Having fears that they are going to chase me down and eat me! So here I am standing out side and there is a snake, just lazily lying in the sun. And it hit me, there is nothing this snake can do to hurt me. And in one bold move, I bent down, and I touched it! And guess what? Nothing happened to me! The snake just slithered away... and i watched it go... no longer afraid.
Now don't get me wrong, I still don't want to burn up, nor be covered in snakes. But I am one step closer to putting some fears aside and being free! What an amazing feeling!
After the snake incident i took a walk down by the lake in the woods, wearing my most favorite pink rubber boots!! I was mostly on a mission to find some black walnuts to harvest. But it was also so beautiful and the woods seemed so inviting. I did find some walnuts, but unfortunately they were starting to rot. I also found some interesting mushrooms, I mean I have never seen an Orange mushroom! Strange. I wonder if they are edible? I love the woods... so much beauty and life. How amazing God's creations are! How blessed I am to witness it all.
Last night I had a wonderfully fun time with Ellen. She treated me to dinner at Bar Abilene, for helping her move. We had yummy margaritas and holy moly guacamole, made fresh at our table! We also saw the movie\documentary, My Kid Could Paint That. Very interesting...
Um, and Ellen saved me when I didn't have enough cash to pay for parking. She's a nice girl.

Krua you're so Cruel

A message to Krua Thai on University Ave.: The next time you want to close "Just for Today"... maybe not do it on a night that i am craving some pad thai goodness with 3rd degree burns on the side. The one day when my fellow burn your mouth off companions and I just want to sit and eat your amazing entrees and watch ANTM... please don't close "Just for Today". Thank you.

I am becoming the person that plans out her menus for meals the week before. What does that indicate? Is this a control issue or just a way for me to stop saying, "Now what am I going to have for dinner tonight"? This past week, since being back from MI has been nonstop, going out and getting together with friends. This will continue into the weekend up until Monday night where i will be making my first meal of the week. alone and in solitude. I used to be a hardcore introvert, and I thought once an introvert, always an introvert. But apparently that can change. Now don't get me wrong, i still need my alone time...but not as frequently, and with the wonderful friends I have, why wouldn't I want to be with them! I have a fun and happy activity filled weekend ahead of me, including walnut harvesting and Les Miserables(!), not at the same time of course... Anyway, I will report back on Monday night, while i am sitting alone and in solitude. unless of course someone calls me up and wants to get together.

Here is my menu for the week... if anyone is interested... I think they will all be winners!!!

Monday: Spicy Eggplant and Cauliflower with Basil, Apple-Cucumber Slaw and Pumpkin Caramels (an experiment!!!)
Tues: Not Home
Wed: Ginger Chicken Soup with Vegetables

Thurs: Beans and Rice Burritos for the girls
Fri: Dinner Party... surprise menu!!!! (sorry S, J & C... you will have to wait!!!)
P.S. Tabitha, you rocked my world with that amazing curry last night!! I loved the Moroccan twist to it! Yumalicious!

Who was I visiting? IDK, my BFF Rachel!

Well I am now back, not really ready to be, but I am back nonetheless. I had the most wonderful time visiting Rachel. I headed out Thursday morning on my trek to Michigan. It has been almost 2 years since i've seen Rachel and in that time she went and had herself a baby! So of course when I made it to the airport, there was Rach holding her baby boy Seth and I started to cry. Tears of joy of course, and happiness... I have known Rach for so long and her desire to be a mother has been evident the first time i met her, and now here she is a wife and mother! My complete and utter happiness for her cannot be contained. We spent our time doing what we do best and that is just relaxing and enjoying each others company. I have great friends, but there is no one like Rach, where I can just show up and no matter how much time or distance has taken place, we start right where we left off, as if there was no lapse in time. We shared memories of our time in New Hampshire, including laughing over the whole "triangle incident" when we liked the same boy!! Along with all our other adventures of memories over the past 10 years!
Part of our time together included cooking and enjoying good food and conversation. The other part of the time was watching re-runs of our favorite show, Felicity. Rachel is a Noel person and I am so for Ben... and if you watched the show too, you will know what that means! Rachel made me a delicious Talapia dish one night and then on the another night I made her some artichoke chicken pasta. The best part was that her mom was just in Italy and she sent Rach a chunk of fresh Parmasiano-Reggiano cheese! That was amazing!! We also indulged in some yummy drinks, including our traditional Grasshopper, or as Rach calls them; "Butterflies".

I loved spending time with Seth, he is such a warm and bright and sweet little boy. I instantly fell in love with him, and I can safely say that his affections to me were matched! Seth is now 9 months old, and rach says he hasn't always been the easiest baby, with having colic and other medical issues, but now he is becoming quite the charmer. He wears this "cool space helmet" to get a flat spot evened out, but I think he looks adorable with it on! And he is growing and growing and soon he won't even need to wear the cool helmet!

I also got to visit with an old friend from years back, sweet Beth. She is probably the sweetest, gentlest person I've ever known, and it was fun visiting with her too!

Time went by way too quickly with this visit. I would've loved just one more day with Rachel. But I was blessed by our time, and happy that i am so lucky and privileged to gain such a perfect friend! I hope that it won't be another 2 years until we see each other. But I know that even if we went 10 years without seeing each other, we would always be able to pick up right where we left off!

In My Backyard?

****I posted this about 2 years ago and I thought it would be fun to post it again. Especially in light of the death of Michael Jackson.****

QUESTION:
If you could have any three bands\performers, alive or dead, over to play in your backyard who would you choose?
Who would i choose? I love such a variety of music from my past to my present. My choices? This is not going to be easy... But these are my 3 picks:

The Grateful Dead w\ Jerry Garcia, For Beaner and Tweaker and the hippy days!!! Steal your face forever!!!! The Dead can jam on and on and they have the best sing along songs.

Johnny Cash, cause who wouldn't want to dance to a rousing version of Ring of Fire and Folsom Prison Blues? I would die to hear A Boy Named Sue live!!!

Micheal Jackson (post Jackson 5, pre-nose job)... couldn't you just see him with the glove bringing down the house with Thriller, Beat It and Billy Jean! Throw in the Moon Walk and girls (and guys) are gonna swoon! Totally Sick!
Runner up: GN'R original 87' line-up.
So... what bands would make your backyard list?

I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane...

By this time tomorrow morning i will be on a plane to Michigan. I will be visiting my BFF Rachel, and some other friends from long ago. This month will mark 10 years since I left everything that was familiar and moved across he country to New Hampshire. It's hard to imagine that this much time has passed, some days it feels like I just left. My time in NH was difficult and wonderful all in one year. The best part of moving there was meeting Rachel. I knew the moment I saw her that we would be best friends. We have seriously gone through so much together, loss and birth, boyfriends and marriage and moves criss-crossing the country. Yet here we are, still as close as the day we met, probably closer, because we have shared so much history. I am looking forward to just chillin' and doing what we do best, just being our goofy selves. I will report back with an update of my travels probably Monday night next week, when I return. peace.

Books I Read in 2019
